Butterflies are incredible creatures that bring joy and colour to every garden. Their amazing transformation from caterpillar to butterfly makes them so remarkable — and one of my favourite insects to spot in my garden.
Monarch butterflies are beginning their migration south for the fall season, which makes them the perfect inspiration for this month's crafting activity.
A butterfly for kids to colour, cut, and turn into a personalized decoration you can place over a mini bouquet of flowers — with a message for a family member, friend, or even a thank-you note for a teacher. You can print the butterfly design for kids to colour in, or simply cut out the blank shape if they'd rather decorate freely, however they like.
My son and I made a couple of these as thank-you notes for his educators at daycare, paired with flowers we picked from our garden. It was such a warm, personal touch.

This butterfly shape is so versatile — use it at different scales for just about anything you can dream up. Slide them over straws to dress up party drinks, onto pens and pencils as gifts or party favours, or even as a decoration on chopsticks at the table.
Pro tip — Advanced crafters can run the butterfly through their cutting machine on scrapbooking paper for decorations that add a special touch to any event.

Crafting Activity — Decorative Butterfly
Materials:
A little note: If you're crafting with a little one, they may need a helping hand from an adult, especially with the cutting part — depending on their age, of course!
Download the worksheet (free printable available below)
Cardstock paper
Colouring pens or crayons, or any other decorative materials of your choice if decorating freely (e.g., glitter and glue)
Scissors (xacto knife — optional)
Scrapbooking paper if you want to run just the outline on your cutter machine
Decorative item of your choice to insert your butterfly: flowers, pen, pencils, straws, etc.
If you have a cutting machine, print the printable layer, then run the "cut" layer through the cutter. If you're using patterned scrapbook cardstock, skip the print step and run the cut layer directly.

Steps:
Print the worksheet on cardstock paper
Cut to shape following the cut line (either manually with scissors or with a cutting machine)
Colour and decorate your butterfly
Write a personalized message on the back (optional)
Insert your decorative item through the opening slot
And there you go! A fun little project you can use any way you'd like!
